Dossier 06 · Journalism
An AI that reads your whole file and does not write your articles
Mnemosyne OS is a desktop application for journalists. You put in your PDFs, interviews, screenshots and notes. You ask a question. The answer cites the file and the passage. Everything stays on your computer.
Windows, macOS and Linux.
Search your PDFs, scans and notes
A 400-page PDF, scans without OCR, an interview transcript, screenshots, your notes. You drop the files in, it reads them.
You ask your question in your own words. The answer gives the file and the passage. You open it, check it, quote it. If the information is not in your files, it tells you.
A 300-page report goes in whole. It is split along its headings, so the answer points to the right section.
Formats it reads: text, PDF, Word, spreadsheets, web pages and images. Audio goes through the recorder.
Check every sentence before you quote it
Turn verification on, and a second pass re-reads the answer sentence by sentence. For each sentence, it looks in your files for the passage that supports it.
A quotation must appear word for word in the named file. Otherwise the sentence is flagged. You see which sentences are supported, partial or unsourced before you use one.
The verdict stays attached to the conversation, and exports with its evidence.
Archive a web page before it is deleted
The application includes a capture browser. You keep a page as Markdown, with its address and date. Or as a PDF, with the URL in the footer. Or all of its images at once.
Each capture needs your click. You review the result before it goes into memory.
If the account is deleted the next week, your copy stays, with its date.
One vault per investigation
You keep each investigation, source or topic in its own vault. You can search three vaults at once. The answer shows the vault of each excerpt.
An isolated vault stays out of these cross searches. What a source told you appears in no other answer.
Proper names are matched exactly, in seven languages. A company named in a 2019 annex comes up next to last month’s interview.
Each investigation can also have its own desktop, with its windows and notes. You switch between them in one click.
Source protection: your files stay on your computer
Your files and your memory are on your disk. Search runs locally. With a local model, you work offline.
Want an online model? You choose which one and when. A vault set to maximum protection never enters your conversations with it.
You can encrypt your vaults. Without your passphrase, the disk is unreadable.
Protecting sources is a legal duty. Here, your notes stay with you.
Find an image by describing it
Photos of documents, screenshots, slides. You describe what you are looking for, it finds the image.
You create your own categories. You pin, rate and describe your images. A daily gallery shows what came in and when.
Images inside a Word document are extracted too. A diagram in the middle of 900 pages becomes searchable. You turn this option on yourself, because it writes files to your folder.
An investigation log you can query
Calls made, what a source refuses to confirm, the lead you dropped, the request sent eleven weeks ago. You write it as a note. The note joins the same memory as your documents.
“What have I already asked this ministry?” You ask, it answers from your notes.
At night, it links notes about the same topic. It adds links. It changes and deletes nothing.
Watch a folder or a feed
You point it at a folder that fills up, a feed or a public thread. It checks even with the window closed. New items wait for you in one place.
Folder watching is part of the application. A public feed goes through a cartridge. It logs into no account for you and gets around no paywall.
Record and transcribe an interview
The microphone records your voice. The computer’s sound records the other person. Face to face or on a Meet, WhatsApp or Telegram call, you get two tracks: yours and theirs. Nothing extra to install.
With two tracks, the transcript knows who speaks: you or the other side. In a meeting of five, the four other voices share one track.
Transcription runs on your computer. Every line carries its time. You replay a line to check a name or a figure before you quote it.
Already have an audio file? Drop it in and it is transcribed the same way. The text exports as Markdown. Put it in a watched folder and it joins your memory.
A summary is offered separately, with who said what. It goes through the model you choose. You read it before you file it.
Recording a conversation is not legal everywhere, or without telling people. The application does not warn the other person for you.
Share a vault peer to peer Beta
Two computers running Mnemosyne OS connect directly, with no server. You give a colleague a vault to read. Or you share a vault with your team, and everyone keeps their own copy.
A deletion never spreads. If two versions diverge, both are kept.
Across two different networks, the application installs Tailscale and guides you.
It stays off until you turn it on.
Try it on one of your files
Windows, macOS and Linux.
Version 1.8.0. Tell us what you are missing.
Mnemosyne OS is at version 1.8.0. One person builds it. This page describes what a newsroom needs, as the developer sees it.
Tell us what is missing: a format it does not handle, a task that takes you an hour a day, what you would never hand to a machine.
Write below. A person reads it and answers.
